Meet the Instructor: Douglas Castleman


Douglas Castleman is an Aviation Artist and Landscape Artist. He will be demonstrating a simple oil painting landscape. The class is meant to emphasis the three values necessary in a landscape painting: background, middleground, and foreground. These three values that you use will allow you have three dimensions on a two dimensional surfaces.


This class is designed for beginners, people who might want a refresher course, or for people who might want to go on to take more comprehensive oil painting classes and workshops at Destination: Art.

Course Syllabus

Lesson 1: Introduction & Materials

An introduction into the inner works of the class and necessary materials

Lesson 2: Pre-Painting Notes & Painting The Background

Doug starts the class with a preliminary sketch. Then continues into an underpainting. Focuses on painting the background sky.

Lesson 3: Painting The Middleground

The moves into painting of the middle ground. Focuses on painting mountains with trees in the distance

Lesson 4: Painting The Foreground Part One

Continues into painting the foreground, adding in more elements of nature with surround trees and grass areas

Lesson 5: Foreground Part Two and Conclusion

The class concludes with the painting of the foreground. Finishing up with last thoughts and overview from Doug Castleman
